The Biggest Comic Cons in the US, Explained

San Diego, New York, Chicago, and beyond: what makes each of the major American comic conventions different, and which one is right for you.

Updated August 20, 2026

The heavyweights

San Diego Comic-Con (July) is the industry's center of gravity: 135,000+ attendees, Hollywood studio panels in Hall H, and badge sales that vanish in minutes. It's a bucket-list show, but a hard first con. Hotels book a year out.

New York Comic Con (October, Javits Center) rivals San Diego in size with a stronger comics-publishing presence and East Coast accessibility. Tickets are easier to get than SDCC but still sell out.

Chicago's C2E2 (spring, McCormick Place) has grown into the Midwest's flagship, with big guest lists, a huge Artist Alley, and a reputation as one of the best-run large shows for actual comics fans.

Big, but different flavors

Beyond the big three, several majors each have a distinct personality:

  • MEGACON Orlando (spring): the Southeast's biggest, a four-day pop culture buffet
  • Emerald City Comic Con, Seattle: comics-first culture, beloved Artist Alley
  • Dragon Con, Atlanta (Labor Day): fan-run, legendary cosplay, takes over five hotels. Closer to a giant fan festival than a trade show
  • Anime Expo, Los Angeles (July): the largest anime convention in North America
  • Fan Expo shows (Boston, Dallas, Denver, and more): consistent traveling formula with big media guests

Which one should you pick?

For meeting comic creators: C2E2, Emerald City, or NYCC. For celebrity photo ops: the Fan Expo circuit and MEGACON. For cosplay culture: Dragon Con. For the full spectacle: SDCC, once in your life.

And honestly, your local regional con might beat all of them for actually enjoying a day of comics. Shorter lines, cheaper tables, artists with time to talk. Use the map on our homepage to see what's within an hour of you. There are more than you think.
